Hair Loss in Pregnancy

Many women notice that their hair seems to get thicker and grow more during pregnancy.  This happens because of the increase of hormones in the body, which cause the skin, and other parts of the body, to change.  These hormones create a continuous growth phase of the scalp hair cycle.

Women will often experience hair loss after pregnancy, as the body and hormones return to normal.  After the baby is born, many of the hairs stop growing and move into the resting phase of the hair growth cycle, for 2-3 months.  When the hair cycle begins again, the hair goes back into the growth phase and old hair is shed all at once.  This can happen up to 3-6 months after the pregnancy, and can last for a period of about 2-3 months.  Some women experience more hair loss than others.  If hair thinning is prevalent in the family, it may be more noticeable during this period.  This hair loss is not permanent and hair growth will resume.  Hair loss can occur after each pregnancy

No hair loss treatment is necessary.  Taking vitamins or using other hair loss products, will not make any difference to the hair loss.  Excessive brushing can accelerate the hair loss, removing hairs more easily, thereby quickening the hair loss and re-growth process.  Needless to say, care should be taken not to damage the existing hair with the brushing.
